Directions to County Forestland from Escanaba
The county forestland is a 1,400-acre parcel located in the northwest part of Delta County near Cornell. It’s about a 30 minute drive northwest of Escanaba. If you’re looking for a park that is less developed and wilder this is the place to explore. The forest offers a variety of recreational activities all year round, however, spring can be a difficult time to visit this park as the ground is still saturated from the winter melt and gates may be closed to protect roads during the thaw.
In the summer months the trails are mowed and are good for walking, hiking, biking, birdwatching, and a host of other activities. Native wildflowers bloom in early summer.
Fall offers hunting opportunities as well as other recreational activities. Hunters can setup blinds (see rules for details) and hunters with disabilities can contact the Parks Manager for accommodations and permitted conditions.
Winter is a great time to visit this park for ungroomed cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. On a sunny winter day, the cedar forest in the southeastern corner of the park is fun to explore. However, a winter visit requires preparation. Be prepared before venturing out.
Rustic camping is allowed with a permit. Permits are free. Contact the Parks Manager for permit information, (906) 786-1020. The main road into the park is well maintained, however the secondary road that takes you to the southeast corner of the property is not well-maintained and travel can be slow.
There are no restroom facilities and no potable water. Make sure you are prepared when visiting the forest. There is cell phone reception, but it can be spotty depending on your carrier.
